How do thermal transfer printers work?
The thermal transfer coders use a 32mm, 53mm or 107mm width thermal printhead to apply ink onto flexible packaging. This is achieved by contact between the printhead and a platen or roller. Situated between the printhead and the label is a very thin thermal transfer ribbon made of a polyester film which is coated on the label side with a wax, wax-resin or pure resin ink.
The ribbon is spooled onto reels up to 1,200m long and is driven through the printing mechanism in sync with the labels, at speeds of up 1,000mm per second.

Built in sensors create a real time image of the negative on the printed ribbon to confirm it matches the print image.
iAssure™ technology determines the type and magnitude of any mismatch and determines if the code is a pass or fail. Once a pre-set number of consecutive fails is reached, the Zodiac Hawk or Falcon can signal for a product to be rejected or stop the line entirely. This can easily be viewed in real time on the CLARiTY monitor, determining overall printer productivity. Meaning for the first time all elements of Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), performance, reliability AND quality can be reported on, driving improvements for the modern, smart factory.
